Hacienda
Juan Viñas, strategically situated between the Irazú
and Turrialba volcanoes in Costa Rica, capitalizes on the rich volcanic
soils, perfect altitude and ideal microclimate of this area to produce
some of the country's best coffee, sugar and macadamia nut crops.
The
3,200 hectare farm has 1,800 hectares of sugar cane, 450 hectares
of coffee, and 100 hectares of macadamia trees. In addition, the
farm contains 700 hectares of reforested and protected areas.

As
part of its corporate philosophy, Hacienda Juan Viñas
has demonstrated a strong committment to the quality of life of
its workers. The company provides housing (more than 400 homes thus
far), health care benefits, training programs and educational facilities
for both the employees and their families.

Within
the farm, the company has built eight towns, each with its own school,
church and soccer field. Also, the company provides free transportation
for its employees within the farms.
In
addition, Hacienda Juan Viñas has shown a strong committment
to environmental protection. On the farm, sound agricultural practices
and an aggresive reforestation program help prevent soil erosion.
Both
the coffee and sugar cane mills operate proper water treatment facilities.
The company also operates the largest and most advanced composting
facility in Costa Rica, producing a high quality organic fertilizer
from 10,000 tons of otherwise contaminating coffee and sugar by-products.
The organic fertilizer is so succesful that the company sells it
to other agribusiness operations under the brand name "La
Hacienda".
